Emergency situation for CII drugs
- Immediate admin of controlled substance is necessary for proper treatment of patient
- No appropriate alternative treatment is available
- It isn't possible for prescribing MD to provide written rx to RPh before dispensing
Faxes allowed as original rx if
- CII drug will be compounded for direct administration via parenteral, IV, IM, SC, or intraspinal infusion
- Patient is resident at LTCF
- Patient is enrolled in hospice care program certified/paid by Medicare
Partial fill (CII)
- If pharmacy is OOS (need to give full amount in 72 hrs or rx is voided)
- Terminally ill patients (ex. hospice)
- LTCF patients (partial fills allowed for up to 60 days from date of issuance)
- If patient requests partial fill (may still pick up remainder before 30 days of issuance is up)
Partial fill (CIII-V)
Refill =/= partial fill!
- Partial filling is recorded in the same manner as a refill (date refilled, amt dispensed, initials of dispensing RPh, etc.)
- Total quantity dispensed doesn't exceed total quantity prescribed
- No dispensing after 6 MONTHS past date of issue
Multiple scripts of a CII
- Can receive up to 90 day supply of the same CII med
- All scripts must be dated with the date of issuance (date written)
- Subsequent scripts must contain a "Do not dispense before ___ (date)"
