Phenomenology
The study of conscious experience as it exists for the person without any attempt to reduce, divide, or compartmentalize it in any way.
Existential Anxiety
The anxiety that arises when one perceives that life has no meaning or purpose.
Actualizing Tendency
The built-in motivation of any organism to develop its potentials to the fullest extent possible.
Organismic Valuing Process
A subconscious guide that attracts people to growth-producing experiences and away from growth-inhibiting experiences.
Positive Regard
The need for all humans to experience love, affection, attention, and nurturance.
Positive Self Regard
Feeling good about oneself, including self-esteem, self-worth, and a positive self-image.
Unconditional Positive Regard
The love and acceptance from parents, regardless of the child's behavior.
Incongruence (Neurosis)
A state of disconnect between our real self and our ideal self, leading to mental illness.
Openness to Experience
Being receptive to the objective and subjective happenings of life, having expanded consciousness, and being able to tolerate ambiguity.
Existential Living
Living fully in each moment, also known as mindfulness.
Flow
A state of complete absorption in an activity that is challenging and requires skill, leading to a loss of self-consciousness and a sense of time.
Organismic Trusting
Allowing oneself to be guided by the organismic valuing process.
Experiential Freedom
The feeling of freedom that comes from having choices.
Creativity
Not just creative expression, but also adapting to new situations.
Physiological Needs
The needs for food, water, air, and other basic necessities that must be met before other needs can be addressed.
Safety and Security Needs
The needs for resources, family health, and a place to live.
Love and Belonging Needs
The need for affiliation, friends, supportive family, group identification, and intimate relationships.
Esteem Needs
The needs to be held in high regard by others and by oneself, stemming from mastery, achievement, and competence.
Self-Actualization
The state of becoming the very best person that one can be.
Self-Determination Theory
A modern humanistic theory that proposes three universal needs: autonomy, relatedness, and competence.
Autonomy
One of the three universal needs in self-determination theory; the sense that we are in control and making our own choices.
Relatedness
One of the three universal needs in self-determination theory; the need for connection and love from others.
Competence
One of the three universal needs in self-determination theory; the need to feel good at something.
