Monetary Policy
The policy related to the supply and value of money in an economy.
Central Bank
The entity in charge of monetary policy, responsible for managing the currency and monetary policy of a country.
Bank of Canada (BoC)
Canada's central bank, which started operations in 1935.
Inflation-targeting
The strategy used by the BoC to keep inflation low and stable.
Currency in Circulation
The total amount of currency, including dollar notes and coins, that is actively used in the economy.
Payments System
An electronic system that clears and settles payments, operated in Canada by Payments Canada.
Lender of Last Resort
The role of the BoC to provide financial institutions with emergency funding to prevent bank runs.
M1+
The simplest measure of money published by the BoC, which includes currency in circulation and chequable deposits.
Payments Canada
The organization responsible for operating the payments system in Canada.
Liquidity Crisis
A situation where financial institutions do not have enough liquid assets to meet immediate demands.
