Fair Use
Specific legal exceptions that let you use copyrighted material without having to ask for permission or pay any fees.
Plagiarism
Using someone else's words, ideas, or other creative works without giving proper or sufficient credit to that person.
Copyright Infringement
When a copyrighted work is used without permission, including copying, reusing, performing, or creating derivative works.
Public Domain
Intellectual or creative works that can be used without permission because there is no copyright, it has been waived, or it has expired.

Showing readers where your ideas come from and validating your arguments through previous research.

Facts that can be easily identified in multiple authoritative sources and do not require citation.
Paraphrasing
Restating someone else's ideas in your own words while giving credit to the original source.
CC BY
A Creative Commons license that allows sharing and adapting the work as long as credit is given to the creator.

A Creative Commons license permitting noncommercial use, with credit to the creator.
CC BY ND
A Creative Commons license that allows for sharing without adaptations, as long as credit is given.
CC BY SA
A Creative Commons license requiring adaptations to be shared under the same terms as the original.

A software tool that helps in organizing and managing references and citations for academic writing.
Direct Quotes
Using the exact words from a source with proper quotation marks and citation.
Adaptation
A modified version of an original work, which may or may not require permission based on copyright.
