Populist Party
People's party; political party formed in 1892 to advocate a larger money supply and other economic reforms
Mary E. Lease
Fiery Populist party spokesperson, also advanced the cause of women's suffrage. Traveled around to farms towns to fire people up.

William Jennings Bryan
A democratic populist leader who ran unsuccessfully three times for the U.S. presidency. During his career as a lawyer, politician, and speaker, he fought for reforms such as the income tax, Prohibition and women's suffrage. (Bimetallism, cross of gold speech)
Robert M. LaFollette
Established a direct primary, an election in which citizens themselves vote to select nominees for upcoming elections, by 1916 all but four states had direct primaries. He also helped his state to improve education, make factories safer, and adopt the direct primary.
Teddy Roosevelt
the president of the united states in 1901, before his presidency he was president of New york city's board of corruption. He also pushed for progressive reforms

A program that he made and its goals were to keep the wealthy and powerful from taking advantage of small businesses owners and the poor.
Muckraker
Writer who uncovers and exposes misconduct in government or business.
Upton Sinclair
A writer that began writing newspapers and completed several successful novels soon after he graduated college in 1897. His most famous work, The Jungle, was Published In 1906. He wrote Muckraker pieces, He also became active in California politics,He won a Pulitzer prize for his novel Dragon's teeth.
16th Amendment
The amendment gave congress the power to collect an income tax without restrictions. A graduated income tax means that wealthy people pay a higher percentage of their income than poor people do
17th Amendment
1913 constitutional amendment that allowed for the direct election of U.S senators by citizens.
19th Amendment
The right to vote shall not be denied or abridged on account of sex
Pure Food and Drug Act
Made to benefit the public by placing the same controls on other foods and on medicines. Although there were a few concerns that the federal government was taking on too much of the states. Most Americans felt like the benefits outweighed the cost. The act also banned the interstate shipment of impure food and the mislabeling of food and drugs.
Clayton Antitrust Act
This strengthened earlier antitrust laws by spelling out those activities in which businesses could not engage.
Federal Reserve Act
This law placed commercial banks under the control of a federal reserve board, which set up regional banks to hold the reserve funds from those commercial banks. This system helps protect the American economy from having too much money end up in the hands of one person, bank or region.
Booker T. Washington
Believed African Americans would gradually win white Americans respect and eventually would be able to exercise their full voting and citizenship rights. He also told blacks to move slowly toward racial progress
William Dubois
Raised in New England and educated at Harvard university. Rejected Booker T. Washington's views and spoke out against them, as well as urged Aferican americans to demand immediately all the rights guaranteed by the constitution.
