1945: Divided Germany into 4 zones- Stalin refuses free elections

Morgenthau Plan

1944-45: US proposal to de-industrialize postwar Germany to prevent future war. Rejected due to fears it would cause instability.
Replaced by the Marshall Plan

Hallstein Doctrine

1955: West Germany’s foreign policy stating it would not recognize any state that recognized East Germany (GDR)

Checkpoint Charlie Standoff

1961: US-Soviet tank standoff at a Berlin checkpoint after a dispute over Allied travel rights. Nearly escalated into conflict, but resolved peacefully.

Ostpolitik

1969-74: West Chancellor Willy Bradt’s policy of improving relations with East Germany and Eastern Bloc.
