What is a CPM unit?
A continuous passive movement (CPM) machine is a piece of equipment that moves the patient’s passively with the intent to increase or maintain motion.
It is typically applied 4-6 hours per day for 1-4 weeks after surgery.
Indications
Increase Range of Motion
Prevention of Post-Surgical Stiffness
Knee CPM are the most commonly used by PT/PTAs
S/P TKA
S/P ACL reconstruction
Tibial plateau fracture
Benefits
Prevents development of adhesions and contractures that cause joint stiffness
Provides a stimulating effect on the healing of tendons and ligaments
Enhances healing of incisions over the moving joint
Increases synovial fluid lubrication of the joint and thus increases the rate of intra-articular cartilage healing and regeneration
Prevents the degrading effects of immobilization
Provides a quicker return of ROM
Decreases postoperative pain
Contraindications
•Deep Vein Thrombosis
•Active bleeding
•Opening incision
•Movement past the range of motion limitation indicated in the plan of care

Impaired mentation
Movement that is limited by other body part (stomach)
Impaired sensation
Adverse Effects
Increased bleeding inside the joint
Increased use of pain medication
