International Migration
Permanent relocation of residential place and activity space.
Geographic Sense of Migration
Change of residence across an administrative boundary, be it intercontinental, international, inter-regional, rural to urban, or some other.
Forced Migration (Involuntary Movement)
People forced to flee their homes or forcibly relocated, such as forced slavery, political prosecution, or relocation to labor camps.
Reluctant Relocation
Migratory movement that is less than fully 'voluntary', like that of international refugees, resettled populations, internally displaced persons, or migrants due to political turmoil, repossession, or famine.
Voluntary Migration
Permanent movement where migrants do not intend to return to their country of origin, often in search of better opportunities and life circumstances.
Refugees
Persons who are outside their country because of a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion.
Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)
People who are forcibly displaced inside their own countries.
Push Factors
Negative home conditions that cause people to migrate, such as political pressures, lack of professional opportunity, poverty, war, and famine.
Pull Factors
Positive attractions of a migration destination, such as economic opportunity, personal safety, liberty, freedom, and social/cultural opportunities.
Geographic (Nature of Migration Laws)
Migration law aspect related to the distance from the place of origin to the destination.
Political (Nature of Migration Laws)
Migration law aspect related to the type of foreign relations between the source and host country.
Policy Framework (Nature of Migration Laws)
Migration law aspect related to quotas for permanent migrants and whether there are open or limited migration flows.
