Free Will
The belief that people can make choices that are not predetermined by external event
Determinisms
The belief that all events, including human actions, are determined by preexisting causes or conditions
Compatibilism and Incompatibilism
Compatibilism is the idea that free will and determinism are compatible, while incompatibilism is the opposite view
Determinism vs Indeterminism
Determinism is the idea that all events are caused, while indeterminism is the idea that some events happen by chance
causal inference
the process of determining if a relationship between variables is causal
Hard Determinism
free will is entirely incompatible with determinism, meaning if determinism is true, we cannot truly make choices
Libertarianism
argues for the existence of genuine free will, where individuals have the ability to choose different actions even under the same circumstances
Soft Determinism
attempts to reconcile free will and determinism by suggesting that even if our actions are caused, as long as we feel we have genuine choice based on our own desires, we can still be considered morally responsible
