Great Stupa at Sanchi

  • The dome itself was plain, but the four gateways were elaborately decorated

  • Worshippers walk through the gates, then around the stupa in a clockwise direction

  • Buddha is not shown anywhere, just symbols of royalty like umbrellas, footprints, wheels, and stupas that show his presence

  • Decorations absorbed local fertility deities into pantheon to both appeal to popular taste and separate secular areas from sacred areas.
