Great Stupa at Sanchi
Buddhist India
300 - 100 BCE
Stone masonry, sandstone on dome
The dome itself was plain, but the four gateways were elaborately decorated
Worshippers walk through the gates, then around the stupa in a clockwise direction
Buddha is not shown anywhere, just symbols of royalty like umbrellas, footprints, wheels, and stupas that show his presence
Decorations absorbed local fertility deities into pantheon to both appeal to popular taste and separate secular areas from sacred areas.
Scenes of worship and Buddha’s travails carved
