Define arousal
an energised state, a readiness to perform
Why is arousal important?
to give performers drive and enthusiasm
What is drive theory based on?
the assumption that increased motivation causes increased drive
What does drive theory sugest?
that as arousal increases, so does performance in a linear fashion
What is the formula for drive theory?
P=f(DxH) (performance is function od drive x habit)
What is dominant response?
the stand out response that the performer thinks is correct
What happens at high arousal?
less information is processed and the perfromer tends to concentrate on the dominant response
What is the dominant response in experts?
usually correct so performance levels stay high
What is a beginer likely to do?
choose the wrong option and the probability of poor performance increases
Why is drive theory unrealistic?
because it suggests that performance is always improving
Why are complex tasks difficult during high arousal?
there is a lot of information to process and important cues could be ignored
Why are simple tasks easy to perform at high arousal?
not much thinking is required
