↳ The climate is dryer when rainforests are cut down and the carbon cycle is reliant on the trees to absorb CO2

What are some threats to the rainforest?

↳ Valuable reserves of oil and gas and the extraction of oil can lead to oil leaks and serious pollution of rivers

↳ Mercury is used to obtain gold which harms rivers and poison tribes who rely on the river for water

↳ Fires are being used to clear lowland trees which sometimes burn out of control (this is for farming)

↳ Enviromentalists concerned that the Trans-oceanic highway will lead to deforestation and will worsen illegal logging in protected areas

How is it sustainable?

↳ Since 2,000 the goverment has put in management plans to control all forest related activities

↳ But the area is large so it’s hard to control

↳ National parks and reserves are set up to protect areas of high biodiversity

↳ In Tambopata National Reseve the enviroment isn’t harmed as waste is recycled and energy provided by rechargable batteries and 60% of all profits go to local communites

↳ The Perus-Manu Conservation Corridor project supports long-term biodiversity conservation of over 10 million hectres of land where dophins and tribes live and their traditional way of life is being protected
