Buildup of aspirin in the body to a toxic level.

Pharmacological action of NSAIDs

Inhibit COX-1 and COX-2 (cyclooxygenase) enzymes.

Function of cyclooxygenase

Enzymes that act to protect the gastric mucosa, enhance platelet aggregation, and promote renal function.

Adverse effects of NSAIDs

• GI upset

• Heartburn

• Nausea

• Gastric ulceration

• Renal dysfunction

• Risk for increased bleeding

Reye’s Syndrome

A condition caused by giving aspirin to children with a viral infections.

Signs/Symptoms:

• Vomiting

• Confusion

• Seizures

• Loss of consciousness

Celecoxib

COX-2 inhibitor; treats inflammation, relieves mild to moderate pain, reduces fever and dysmenorrhea (period cramps).
