pulmonary ventilation
The exchange of air between atmosphere and the air sacs over (alveoli) of the lungs. This is normally accomplished by the inhalation and exhalation breathing.
External gas exchange
Occur in lungs as oxygen diffusers from the air sacs into the blood and carbon dioxide diffusers out of the blood to be eliminated.
Internal gas exchange
Occurs in the tissues as oxygen diffusers from the blood to the cells, whereas carbon dioxide travels from the cells into the body.
Gas transport
Occurs in the blood. The circulating blood carries gases between the lungs and tissues, supplying oxygen to the cells and bringing back carbon dioxide.
Cellular respiration
Occurs when the cell take in oxygen and use it in the breakdown of nutrients. In this process the cells release energy and carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular respiration.
