What are the 3 points of Cell Theory
Living organisms are composed of cells
The cell is the smallest unit of life
Cells can only arise from pre-existing cells (through cell division)
What are the 7 necessary functions of life
1) Metabolism
2) Reproduction
3) Sensitivity
4) Homeostasis
5) Excretion
6) Nutrition
7) Growth
What is an emergent property?
A function that is present in multicellular organisms but not present in individual cells. It is a characteristic that arises when different parts of a system interact to create new functions
What is a stem cell?
Unspecialised cells with both self renewal—they can continuously divide and replicate—and potency—have the capacity to differentiate.
What is the relationship between surface area and volume?
When volume is divided by surface area, this is the ratio between the two variables (sa and v). The higher the rate of the diffusion in the cell, the greater the ratio.
Magnification Formula?
magnified size
actual size
What is a Eukaryote?
A cell that contains a nucleus
What is a prokaryote?
single celled organisms that have a simple cell structure without compartmentalisation (membrane bound organelles)
