Proportion
A relation that compares two or more quantities and shows their relationship.
Colon notation
A proportion written with two points separating the terms (A:B).
Fraction form
A proportion written as a fraction (A/B).
A to B notation
A proportion written using the words 'to' (A to B).
Part-to-part proportion
A proportion that compares one part of a group to another part of the same group.
Part-to-whole proportion
A proportion that compares a part to the total amount (the whole) of the group.
Order matters
The order of the quantities in a proportion determines what is being compared; reversing changes meaning.
Total amount
The sum or total number of items in a group (the whole).
Banana-to-pineapple example
An example where bananas are the first term and pineapples the second, e.g., 4:3.
Pineapple-to-banana example
An example where pineapples are the first term and bananas the second, e.g., 3:4.
