Oogenesis
The process of producing female gametes.
Fertilization
The process in sexual reproduction in which male and female reproductive cells join to form a new cell.
Gestation
The growth process from conception to birth; houses the fetus.
Parturition
The process of giving birth.
Neonatal nutrition
Nutritional needs met for newborns after birth.
Follicle cells
Cells of the ovary that secrete estrogen when stimulated by FSH.
Corpus luteum
The structure in the ovaries that secretes progesterone after ovulation.
Oogonium
A precursor cell that undergoes mitosis during fetal development to produce primary oocytes.
Primary oocyte (2n)
The product of the mitotic division that occurs during oogenesis.
Secondary oocyte
An oocyte in which the first meiotic division is completed.
Uniparous
Producing one offspring at a time.
Multiparous
Producing multiple offspring at a time; can have litters.
Antrum of ovary
A fluid-filled follicular cavity.
Ovulation
The rupture of a mature follicle to release the ovum.
Corpus hemorrhagicum
The site of a collapsed follicle that contains a blood clot in the ovary.
Corpus albicans
The 'white body' representing the further deterioration of the corpus luteum.
Infundibulum
The funnel-shaped opening into the oviduct near the ovary.
Fimbriae
Finger or fringe-like projections at the end of the oviducts that locate and catch follicles.
Myometrium
The muscular middle layer of the uterus, composed of smooth muscle.
Cervix
The opening to the uterus that controls access and protects the fetus.
Estrus
Period when females are receptive to mating.
Mucus plug
A collection of thick mucus in the cervix that prevents bacteria from entering the uterus.
Vagina
A muscular, elastic passageway extending from the uterus to the outside of the body.
Vulva
The external opening of the vagina.
