Molecules of life
The nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids that all living things contain.
Cells
The smallest units of life; all cells arise from preexisting cells; organisms can be unicellular or multicellular.
Unicellular
Organisms consisting of a single cell (e.g., bacteria).
Multicellular
Organisms composed of many cells (e.g., plants).
Growth and reproduction
All living things grow and reproduce; reproduction can be sexual or asexual.
Metabolism
All chemical reactions that occur within the cells of living things; organisms use energy and raw materials to carry out metabolism.
Response to environment
Living things respond to their environment.
Homeostasis
The relatively constant and self-correcting internal environment of a living organism.
Adaptation and evolution
Populations have adaptive traits that allow them to survive, reproduce, and eventually evolve.
Seven basic characteristics of all living things
1) Molecules of life, 2) Cells, 3) Growth and reproduction, 4) Metabolism, 5) Response to environment, 6) Homeostasis, 7) Adaptation and evolution.
Levels of biological organization
The hierarchical organization of life from molecules up to ecosystems.
Domains and Kingdoms
Major classifications in biology used to categorize organisms.
Poll Everywhere
An in-class, real-time polling tool used for attendance and questions.
PBL (Problem-Based Learning)
A group-based learning activity used in BIOL 1151 to tackle problems collaboratively.
