cornea
Window of the eye
Conjunctiva
Delicate membrane lining the eyelids and covering the eyeball. It is a protective covering. It especially protects the cornea. (The knight)
Sclera
Tough, white outer coat of the eyeball. It provides protection and helps maintain the eye's shape. (wall)
Lens
The transparent structure behind the pupil that changes shape to help focus images on the retina. (camera lens)
Iris
Controls the amount of light entering the eye. Too much light entering the eye could cause potential damage. (window curtains/sunglasses)
Pupil
The adjustable opening in the center of the eye through which light enters to the retina. (black hole)
Retina
The light-sensitive inner surface of the eye. It is made up of Rod + Cone cells. It reacts to the light and transmits electrical impulses to the brain. (processor)
Rod & Cone cells
Rods: Night/ low light vision and peripheral.
Cones: 3'cs (COLOR, CONTRAST, CLARITY)
They make up the retina
Aqueous Humor
Water-like fluid in the eye, found between the cornea and the lens. It maintains eye pressure in the eye. (tire pump)
Vitreous Humor
Soft, jelly-like material behind the lens in the vitreous chamber; helps maintain the interior shape of the eyeball. Lets light through. (balloon)
Ciliary Muscle
Muscle that helps focus light on the retina by controlling the movement of the lens + pupil of the eye. Holds lens in place. (The donut behind the iris, or rubber band)
Optic Nerve
Transmits visual information from retina to brain. If the brain does not receive information from the retina there is no vision. (cable wire in Wreck in Ralph when they switch games)
Ciliary Body
Ring of tissue behind the peripheral iris that is composed of ciliary muscle and ciliary processes. It holds the lens in place allows it to change shape. (accommodation) (lens focus)
Anterior Chamber
Area behind the cornea and in front of the lens and iris. It contains aqueous humor. (A slime squishy or snow globe)
Posterior Chamber
Space between the back of the iris and the front of the vitreous chamber; filled with aqueous humor (Those giant slimes that are made up of multiple slimes.)
Fovea
The central focal point in the retina, around which the eye's cones cluster. Responsible for good visual acuity. (camera focus)
Chloroid
The thin middle layer of the eyeball; contains blood vessels for nourishing the retina. It is pigmented which prevents reflections in the eye. (vampire.)
Macula
part of the retina responsible for central vision (season 11, episode 16 grey's anatomy)
Optic pathways
Includes the retina, optic nerve, optic chiasm, optic radiations, and occupational cortex.
Other term for Nearsighted
myopia
