Lecture 18
What is the Structural Features of Mycoplasma?
Small free living bacterial
Cell membrane contains STEROLS
DOES NOT HAVE A CELL WALL
Resistant to cell wall disruptor antibiotics
What is the structural features of Mycoplasma pneumoniae?
Virulence: P1 adhesin
Specifically attaches to receptors located at the bases of cilia in epithelial cells lining the respiratory tracts of humans
ANTIGENIC VARIATION: superantigen, change surface
What is the clinical manifestations of Mycoplasma pneumoniae?
Extracellular bacteria: causes respiratory tract diseases. STRICTLY human
Asymptomatic carrier.
Tracheobronchitis: low grade fever, malaise, headache, dry cough
ACUTE PHARYNGITIS: tracheobronchitis symptoms worsen to include oropharynx.
What is the treatment for Mycoplasma pneumoniae?
Macrolides (Azithromycin)
Tetracyclines (doxycycline)
Fluroquinolones
What is the clinical manifestations for M. hominis?
Kidney inflammation, postpartum fever, pelvic inflammatory disease in women
What is the treatment for M. hominis?
RESISTANT to macrolides and Fluoroquinolones
Clindamycin is used
What is the structural features of M. genitalium?
More likely to happen in women
What is the clinical manifestations of M. genitalium?
Urethral inflammation, cervicitis, and pelvic inflammatory disease in women
What is the treatment for M. genitalium?
RESISTANT TO macrolides and fluoroquinolones
Clindamycin is used.
