Define
To give a precise meaning of a word, phrase, concept or physical quantity.
Describe
to give a detailed account of something
Identify
to provide an answer from a number of possibilities, often presented in the stimulus material in the examination or contents of the syllabus.
List
Give a sequence of brief answers without explanations
Outline
Give a brief account or summary of something.
State
to give a specific answer, such as a name, value or other brief answer without the need for an explanation or calculation.
Explain
to give a detailed account of something, including reasons or causes where appropriate.
Apply
to the use an idea, equation, principle, theory, or law in relation to a given problem or issue.
Analyse
to break things down in order to bring out the essential elements or structure.
Comment
to give a judgement or opinion based on a given statement or result of a calculation
Distinguish
to make clear the differences between two or more terms, concepts, or items.
Discuss
to offer a considered and balanced review, which includes a range of arguments, factors or hypotheses.
Evaluate
to make an appraisal by weighing up the strengths and limitations of something.
Examine
to consider an argument, issue, or concept in a way that uncovers the assumptions and interrelationships of the issue.
Justify
to give valid reasons or evidence in order to support an answer or conclusion.
Recommend
to present an advisable course of action with appropriate supporting evidence / justified reasoning in relation to a given situation, problem, or issue.
Compare
to give an account of the similarities between two (or more) things.
Compare and contrast
to give an account of similarities and differences between two (or more) things, referring to both (or all) of them throughout the answer.
Contrast
to give an account of the differences between two (or more) things. It requires you to refer to both (all) of these issues / situations / items throughout the answer.
Calculate
to obtain a numerical answer, showing the relevant stages in the working out.
Complete
To complete means to add missing information / data, perhaps in a table or chart.
Construct
to display information in a diagrammatic or logical form
Draw
to represent by means of a labelled, accurate diagram or graph, using a pencil.
Label
to add texts / labels to a particular diagram
Plot
to mark the position of particular points on a diagram.
Prepare
to put given data or information from the stimulus / source material into a suitable format.
Annotate
to add brief notes to a diagram, chart or graph, such as a product life cycle diagram or a break-even chart.
Determine
the skill of obtaining the only possible answer in a question.
To what extent
Consider the merits or otherwise of an argument or concept. Opinions and conclusions should be presented clearly and supported with appropriate evidence and sound argument.
Demonstrate
to make something clear by showing reasoning and/or evidence, illustrating this with examples or practical application.
Suggest
to propose a solution, hypothesis or other possible answer to a question, proposal, or issue.
