Everything to learn from this lecture
What are the three systems of the human body?
Skeletal, Muscular and Nervous systems
Bones, cartilage and joints
What makes up the Skeletal system?
What makes up the Nervous system?
Brain, spinal cord and nerves
Muscles and tendons
What makes up the Muscular system?
What are the ten regions of the body?
Head/neck, upper extremity(limbs), thorax, back, abdomen, pelvis, perineum, lower extremity(limbs)
What is the brachium?
Upper arm (from shoulder to elbow)
What is the antebrachium?
Forearm (from elbow to wrist)
What do anterior and posterior mean respectfully? (Ex. Anterior thigh and posterior thigh)
Front and back ( front thigh and back thigh )
What is anatomical position?
Anything pointing forwards (such as: head, eyes, palms, feet, toes)
Anatomy vs. Physiology
Anatomy is structure and Physiology is function
What is dorsiflexion?
The flexion of the foot in dorsal, or upward, direction
what is Plantarflexion
The movement of the foot in a downward motion away from the body.
What does superior mean? (Ex: the heart is superior to the liver)
Towards the head or the upper part of a structure
What does inferior mean? (Ex: the stomach his inferior to the lungs)
Away from the head, or the lower part of a structure
What does anterior mean?(ex: the Sternum is anterior to the breastbone)
Nearer to, or at the front of the body.
What does posterior mean?(Ex:the esophagus is posterior to the trachea)
Nearer to, or at the back of the body
What does medial mean?(Ex: The ulna is medial to the radius)
Never to or at the midline of the body.
What does lateral mean? (Ex:the lungs are lateral to the heart)
Farther from the midline
What does intermediate mean?
Between two structures
What does Ipsilateral mean?(Ex: The right arm is ipsilateral to the right leg.)
On the same side of the body as another structure
What does contralateral mean?(Ex: The left arm is contralateral to the right leg.)
On the opposite side of the body from another structure
What does proximal mean?(Ex: the humerus is proximal to the radius)
Nearer to the origination of a structure
What does distal mean? (Ex: The phalanges are distal to the carpals)
Farther from the origination of a structure
What does superficial mean?(Ex: The ribs are superficial to the lungs)
Toward or on the surface of the body.
The ribs are deep to the skin of the chest and back
Away from the surface of the body.
