Monomers
Monomers are small, simple molecules that can bind together in a regular pattern to form much larger molecules.
Monomers are formed through condensation reactions.
Examples:
-Glucose - Forms cellulose, carbohydrates
-Fructose - Form insulin
-Amino acids - Form proteins
-Ethene - Forms Polyethene (plastic).
Polymers
Polymers are formed when multiple monomers bind together in a regular pattern.
Polymers are formed through hydrolysis reactions
Condensation reactions
Condensation reactions (or dehydration reactions) are initiated when two OH (hydroxyl groups) groups react to form a water molecule (H2O).
Hydrolysis reactions
Hydrolysis involves the breaking down of polymers using water molecules (H2O). During biological processes this process uses an enzyme to catalyse the reaction.
