Two Major types of cells

• prokaryotic - no nucleus

• eukaryotic- has nucleus

• Has no DNA

• Lacks membrane-bound

• Reproduces via binary fission, asexually

• 0.1-5 micrometers

eukaryotic cells

• Has DNA (which is enclosed in a nuclear membrane)

• Has Membrane-bound organelles

• Reproduces asexually (mitosis) or sexually (meiosis)

• 10-100 micrometers

Bacteria

True prokaryotes with peptidoglycan cell walls

Archaea

• Prokaryotes that live in extreme environments

• Lacks peptidoglycan

• More closely related to eukaryotes genetically

Domain Eukarya

• All eukaryotic organisms

• Divided into 4 kingdoms: Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia

used to observe eukaryotic cells and stained prokaryotes
