Man gave out papers instructing people to avoid the WWI draft, was arrested - taken to supreme court - determined his arrest was constitutional under "clear and present danger"

Gideon vs. Wainwright

man arrested but told he could only represent himself cause he couldn't afford an attorney -> supreme court rules for selective incorporation of 6th amendment

tinker v des moines

person wore black arm band to school to protest vietnam --> suspended. Court ruled it was just a form of free speech and not disruptive, suspension was not fair. Expanded rights of students free speech in public schools

mapp v. ohio

ladies home was forcibly entered looking for bombs, found illegal materials, evidence obtained was inadmissible. Made it so exclusionary rule was incorporated at state level

miranda v arizona

arrested and investigated for rape without being told his rights to be silent. Coerced confession out of him. Supreme court ruled the statements could not be used in a court of law unless they had been informed of their rights. Led to creation of miranda rights being read for arrest to be valid

brown v board of education

ruled against segregation of educational facilities. important in civil rights movement
