What is a ‘resultant force’?
A single force that can replaced all the forces acting on an object as it has the same effect of all the original forces acting together.
What do free body diagrams show?
Free body diagrams show all the forces acting on an object
What do the size and direction of the arrows in a free body diagram represent?
Size of arrows - the relative magnitudes of the forces
Direction of the arrows - the direction of the forces
What can a single force be split into?
A single force be split into two components acting at right angle to one another
When these components act together, they have the same effect as the single force
What is meant if an object is in equilibrium?
When all the forces acting on an object combine to give a resultant force of zero
If all the forces acting on an object combine to give a resultant force of zero…
… the object is at equilibrium
How is equilibrium presented in a diagram?
In a diagram this means that the tip of the last force you drew should end where the tail of the first force you drew begins
