Open street map (OSM) was used in Haiti in 2010 to help people in the earthquake

What are reasons why we must use a combination of sources when researching place?

• Subjective Due to positionality

What is geospatial data?

Data with a spatial or geographic component so it can be mapped

What is GIS and what can it do?

• it organises spatial data allowing us to visualise and analyse geographic data

• This can track marine endangered species eg whales

• It can also help reduce crime levels in an area

What is big data?

Large data sets where technology has allowed some of the data to be stored online eg: on the cloud

What are some features of big data? And an example

• constantly being updated

• Huge in volume - petabytes

• Eg: barcodes which enable big data to be collected in supermarkets
