Why were there tensions at Tehran?
Postwar visions: Each member of the Grand Alliance had a different view of Europe after the war ended
Trust issues: There was a lot of mistrust between the capitalist West and communist East
Division of Germany: The Allies were already discussing how to divide Germany, while the USSR wanted to control it to reduce risk of attacks in the future
Control of Poland: The UK had promised to support a free Poland, while the USSR wanted to use it as a buffer zone
What happened at Tehran?
The UK and the USA agreed to open a second front in Europe to help relieve pressure off the USSR.
The USSR agreed to help fight against Japan, as long as Germany was defeated first.
There was an understanding that Germany should be left as a weak nation after the war, and land it had seized should be returned.
General agreement over spheres of influence: Russia - east and Communist, UK/USA - west and Capitalist
How were tensions heightened at Tehran?
Tensions affected the UK more so.
Churchill wanted the second front to open in the Balkans rather than Western Europe.
Suggestions that the British Empire was a larger threat to global peace than the Soviet Union.
