Modality

refers to specific types of sensation.

sensory adaptation

change in sensitivity (usually a decrease) durning long lasting stimulus

-rapid = pressure/ touch/ smell

-slow = pain/ body position/ blood chemistry

Exteroceptors

sensitive to external environment conditions - sight, sound, taste, smell, and touch

Proprioceptors

receptors responding to body position, movement and degree of stretch

-tendons, muscle and bone

Interoreceptors

receptors on internal organs responding to stretching and peristalsis and internal environment

Somatic sense

pain, temperature, pressure, touch, and proprioreception

special senses

vision, taste, smell, hearing, equilibrium

internal senses

chemo and baro

Thermoreceptors

They are in the skin and they detect heat and cold. They also help regulate the body's temperature

Chemoreceptors

They are responsible for detecting smell in the nose and taste on the tongue

Mechanoreceptors

They respond to touch and pressure

Photoreceptors

are called rods and cones, that absorb light and allow us to see different levels of of light and shades of colour
