Literature
A collection of published information or materials on a particular topic.
Primary Source
Original, firsthand sources that provide direct information.
Secondary Source
Sources that interpret, analyze, or discuss information from primary sources.
Criteria for Evaluating Information
Five basic criteria include reliability, accuracy, authority, objectivity, and currency.
Citation
Provides details about a source used in research.
In-Text Citation
Found in research chapters, containing the author's last name, publication date, and page information.
Exploratory Synthesis
Combining sources to explain a perspective and reasoning.
Argument Synthesis
Bringing sources together to make an argument.
APA Style
American Psychological Association style, primarily used in social sciences.
MLA Style
Modern Language Association style, commonly used in the humanities.
CMS
Chicago Manual of Style, widely used in history, business, and the fine arts.
Research Design
A structured framework guiding data collection, measurement, and analysis.
Descriptive Research Design
Describes a population or phenomenon.
Correlational Research Design
Explores relationships between two or more variables.
Experimental Research Design
Tests causal relationships by manipulating variables.
Validity
Measures what it is supposed to measure.
Reliability
Degree to which an instrument consistently measures what it is supposed to.
Probability Sampling
Every member of a population has a chance to be selected.
Convenience Sampling
Based on availability and proximity of members.
Purposive Sampling
Samples chosen based on the goals of the study.
Quota Sampling
Samples selected by judgement or fixed quotas.
Snowball Sampling
Participants recruit other members for the study.
