Absolute Value

Order of Operations

PEMDAS

P = Parentheses, E = Exponents, M = Mutltiplication, D = Division, A = Addition, S = Subtraction Read from left to right

Substitution Property

A mathematical principle that allows you to replace 1 value with another equal value in an equation or expression.

Example: 2x+7y: x = 3 and y = 1

2(3) + 7 (1) = 6+7=13

Distribution Property Within an algebraic expression

Multiply the term outside the parentheses by each term inside the parentheses.

Examples: 3 (x+4)

3x+12

3x/3 12/3 x =4

Combining like terms to simplify algebraic expressions

The process of simplifying an algebraic expression by adding or subtracting terms that have the same variables raised to the same power.

Example: 3x+2+5x+7

3x+5x = 8x

2+7=9

final answer = 8x+9

Algebraic Expression

A Mathematical phrase made up of number and variables

Example: ab squared +c if a = 2, b=4, c = 7

2 times 4 squared + 7

2 times 16 = 32

32+ 7 = 39
