Imperialism

extending power/control over territories by acquisition 

Isolationism

a doctrine of closing off a state from international alliances and agreements

Nation Building

construction of a national identity in a state that has failed (or is failing) by outside agents 

Power vacuum

 insurgents or extremists have filled the void in a country where the government has failed to maintain order

 Protectorate

a state dependent on another sovereign government for defense

Puppet state

a state that appears to be independent but in reality is controlled by another stronger country through the threat of force

Realpolitik

a system of politics based on practical considerations (It is one thing to wish it would happen, but another to actually implement it)

Regime change

replacement of one government with another; often by social revolution (or outside pressure)

Rogue state

a nation that fails to adhere to the norms of international relations; usually a dictatorship or a state-sponsor of terror

Satellite state

a country that reflects the politics, economics, and culture of another; often influenced by the military of the stronger nation’s sphere of influence
