Pressure Relief Valve (PRV)
A valve that protects a hydraulic system from overpressure by allowing fluid to return to the reservoir when a preset pressure is exceeded.
Cracking Pressure
The pressure at which a valve begins to lift from its seat, allowing fluid to flow.
Non-return Valve (Check Valve)
A valve that allows fluid to flow in one direction only and prevents backflow.
Shuttle Valve
A valve that directs fluid from one of two supply routes based on which pressure is higher.
Throttling Valve
A type of valve that regulates flow to ensure a constant flow rate, used to control the speed of hydraulic motors.
Pressure Reducing Valve
A valve that reduces the pressure of fluid to subsystems, directing full pressure to essential systems like flight controls.
Sequencing Valve
A valve that ensures operations occur in a specified sequence, allowing one service to complete before another is activated.
Hydraulic Fuse
A device that shuts off flow in the event of a leak, preventing total loss of hydraulic fluid from the system.
Modulator
A device used in anti-skid systems that controls brake pressure and fluid flow for fine braking control.
Filtration in Hydraulic Systems
The process of filtering hydraulic fluid to remove contaminants, typically down to 25 microns, to protect the system.
Heat Exchanger
A component that cools hydraulic fluid while warming fuel, often located in fuel tanks.
Priority Valve
A valve that directs fluid to primary services and sacrifices non-essential services if pressure drops below a set limit.
Choke
A device used to restrict flow in both directions to manage the speed of operation in hydraulic systems.
Bypass Valve
A device that allows unfiltered fluid to bypass a clogged filter to ensure continuous fluid flow in hydraulic systems.
