Cerebrum
The largest part of the brain, containing the cerebral cortex and part of the forebrain
Cerebral Cortex
The highly folded outer layer of the cerebrum
Forebrain
A major division of the brain that includes the cerebrum
Central Sulcus
A sulcus that extends from the superior surface down the lateral surface, separating the frontal and parietal lobes
Lateral Sulcus
A sulcus located inferior to the central sulcus, separating the temporal lobe from the frontal and parietal lobes
Precentral Gyrus
The gyrus located immediately anterior to the central sulcus, containing the primary motor cortex
Postcentral Gyrus
The gyrus located immediately posterior to the central sulcus, containing the primary somatosensory cortex
Superior Temporal Gyrus
One of the three gyri in the temporal lobe, containing the primary auditory cortex
Calcarine Sulcus
A sulcus on the medial surface of the brain, associated with the primary visual cortex
Parieto-occipital Sulcus
A sulcus that forms the boundary between the parietal and occipital lobes
Cingulate Gyrus
A gyrus running around the corpus callosum, important in the limbic system and learning mechanisms
Corpus Callosum
A large bundle of nerve fibers connecting the two hemispheres of the brain
Longitudinal Fissure
A deep cleft that separates the two hemispheres of the brain
Frontal Lobe
The most anterior lobe of the cerebrum, associated with decision-making and high cognitive function
Parietal Lobe
Located posterior to the frontal lobe, associated with somatosensation and integrative processing
Occipital Lobe
The most posterior lobe of the cerebrum, concerned with vision
Temporal Lobe
Located inferior to the lateral sulcus, associated with learning, memory, auditory processing, and language
Tentorium Cerebelli
A double fold of dura mater that separates the cerebellum from the cerebrum
Pre-occipital Notch
An anatomical landmark used to define the extent of the occipital lobe
Primary Motor Cortex
The area of the brain responsible for initiating voluntary movements
Primary Somatosensory Cortex
The area of the brain that receives sensory information from the body
Primary Auditory Cortex
The area of the brain that processes auditory information
Primary Visual Cortex
The area of the brain that processes visual information
Limbic System
A complex system of structures involved in emotion, motivation, and memory
