Waterproofing
This is the method of forming a barrier over surfaces of foundations, roofs, walls and other structural members of buildings to prevent water penetrations through these surfaces.
Dense concrete waterproofing
Waterproofing through the use of dense Portland cement mortar and concrete alone.
Membrane waterproofing
Layers of waterproofing materials used in this method range from ordinary tar paper laid with coal-tar pitch to asbestos or asphalted felt laid in asphalt. This is more expensive and is more suitable for exterior use such as on balconies and pools.
Integral Waterproofing Compounds
Classification of waterproofing methods for concrete done by mixing foreign substances with the concrete. These are manufactured and sold under various trade names, and are available in powder or liquid form.
Waterproofing Coatings and Washes
Classification of waterproofing methods for concrete done by applying waterproof coatings or washes to the concrete after it is in place.
Damp proofing
A type of moisture control applied to building walls and floors to prevent moisture from passing into the interior spaces. It is protection of a structure from the seepage of water by capillary action.
Water repelling
Applying by brushing or low-pressure spray, a clear silicon water repellent or sealant to porous surface materials such as cement plaster and bricks to prevent weathering. An example is Thompson's Water Seal.
Thermal insulation
Method of installing thermal barriers in surfaces of structures to keep the heat or cold away from the interior spaces.
Batt insulation
Flexible, fibrous thermal insulation of glass or mineral wool, made in various thickness and lengths. Fit between studs, joist, and rafters in light-frame construction, sometimes faced with a vapor retarder of kraft paper, metal foil, or plastic sheet.
Blanket insulation
a type of batt insulation made from fibrous materials such as mineral wool, wood fiber, cotton fiber or animal hair and made into a batt or boards.
Rigid board insulation
A preformed, non-structural insulating board of foamed plastic or cellular glass. Also called Block or Rigid Slab insulation
Loose fill insulation
Type of insulation which consists of small particles of fiber, foam, or other materials. These small particles form an insulation material that can conform to any space without disturbing structures or finishes.
Foamed-in-place insulation
Thermal insulation in the form of a foamed plastic, such as polyurethane, that is sprayed or injected into cavity where it adheres to the surrounding surfaces.
Sprayed-on insulation
Insulation of the fibrous or foam type that is applied to a surface by means of power spray devices. It is used for concrete roof decks.
Reflective insulation
Thermal insulation in the form of a material of high reflectivity and low emissivity, such as paper-backed aluminum foil or foil-backed gypsum board, used in conjunction with a dead air-space to reduce the transfer of heat by radiation.
Soil poisoning
A type of termite or anay proofing; treating the soil surrounding the structure in touch with the ground. An example is LENTREK TC Termicide Concentrate.
Factory-applied wood preservative
Factory pressure applied wood preservatives such as boliden salts.
Site-applied wood preservative
Application of a chemical liquid on the wood surface (Solignum) to protect it against pest intrusion, such as termites and powder post beetles (bukbok), and decay-causing fungi, such as sap stain and rot.
Termite shield
A shield, usually of noncorrodible metal, placed on top of the foundation wall or around pipes to prevent passage of termites.
Rat proofing
A method of protecting rooms against the intrusion of rats and other small destructive animals from gnawing the wooden parts of the house and habituating the under-ceilings and under-floors of houses and buildings.
Fire Proofing
Application of cover materials to structural steel components or systems to provide increased fire resistance. Also called sprayed fireproofing.
Floor protection
A method of protecting finish floor surface from wear and tear or from chemical abrasions due to heavy use.
Rust proofing
A method of protecting the steel and other ferrous materials from corrosion.
Paint remover
A liquid which is applied to a dry paint or varnish to cause it to soften or lose adhesion so that it may be removed easily.
Stripper
A liquid designed to remove coatings by chemical and/ or solvent action.
Bituminous cement
A black substance available in solid, semi-solid, or liquid states at normal temperatures. Used for sealing built-up roofing, and joints and cracks of concrete pavements.
Descaler
A liquid designed to remove scale that forms on the inside of hot water heaters, boilers etc.
Silicone sealant
A multi-purpose sealant that typically does not shrink or crack and offers flexibility and adhesion, and a weatherproof, watertight seal.
