What caused the Truman Doctrine?
Harry Truman was becoming increasingly concerned about the Soviet Union planning to spread Communism
He believed in the Domino Effect - the idea that Communism would be spread from country to country until it was stopped.
What was the Truman Doctrine
It was Truman’s response to Soviet Expansionism, ensuring Communism wouldn’t spread to any more countries.
In 1947, he gave a speech stating that he would give financial and military aid to countries threatened by armed groups or outside pressures i.e. communist groups.
What was the Marshall Plan?
As part of his plan to contain communism, Truman gave financial aid to capitalist Western countries, hoping that this financial aid would stop poverty and help rebuild the countries after the war. This would theoretically stop the countries from turning to a communist government.
What happened during the Marshall Plan?
Aid was provided in cash, machinery, food and technological assistance.
In return, countries who received aid would agree to buy US goods and allow US companies to invest capital in their industries.
Between 1948 and 1953, the USA gave 16 Western European countries over $13 billion in aid.
This aid included machinery for factories and farms, improvements to transport systems, and money to make and buy weapons.
What was the impact of the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan?
It did help to stop the spread of communism, however it increased tensions with the Soviet Union because Eastern European countries were given nothing. Stalin became convinced that the USA were trying to win countries to their side with offers of money.
