Copyright
A legal protection for original works of authorship (songs, recordings, books, films) once they are fixed in a tangible form.
Fair Use
Limited use for education, criticism, news, or parody without permission.
Bundle of Rights
The six rights a copyright owner has: reproduce, prepare derivative works, distribute copies, publicly perform, publicly display, and digital audio transmission.
Public Domain
Works for which copyright has expired and are free to use.
Mechanical License
A license that allows for the mechanical reproduction of music, requiring payment to make a copy.
Performance Rights
Rights to publicly perform a musical work, typically collected by performance rights organizations.
Synchronization License
A license needed to pair music with visual media, negotiated without a statutory rate.
Infringement
Violation of any exclusive right to a work, which can lead to legal remedies.
Derivative Work
A new version or adaptation of a copyrighted work.
Termination Right
The ability to reclaim copyright after 35 years.
