Bacterial cells occur in one of the three shapes
coccus, bacillus, spirillum
coccus
spherical-shaped bacteria
bacillus
rod-shaped bacterium
spirillum
comma shape (virgo) or corkscrew shaped
What is detain used for when observing a specimen?
slows down rapid movement of protozoans to permit more detailed observations
For which organisms will we be using Detain?
Paramecium (Alveolata)
Amoeba requires detain.
F
What structures are found in plant cells that are not found in animal cells?
Plant cells— rigid cellulose cell wall
Chloroplasts organelles
Liquid filled central vacuole
Animal cells have… which plant cells do not have.
Centrioles
More lysosomes than plant cells
centriole
cylindrical structures composed of nine triplet microtubule 'blades' organized around a central cartwheel
In what type of organisms are heterocysts found?
Fialmentous bacteria, Anabaena
What is the function of a heterocyst?
performs nitrogen fixation when there is a lack of fixed
How do you prepare a wet mount for observing an amoeba? (steps 1)
place a drop of water on clean slide & place specimen in the drop of water (if using a suspended in liquid medium, place a drop of liquid containing the specimen)
Step 2 of wet mount slide
Place one edge of coverslip against slide @ 45 degree angle →
slide it toward drop of water so coverslip touches liquid on slide
Final step of wet mount slide preparation
Lower coverslip gently → slide
(prevents production of air droplets under cover slip)
