Nomenclature
A system or set of names used in a particular field, especially in science.
Monatomic ion
An ion formed from a single atom, either a cation (positive ion) or an anion (negative ion).
Cation
A positively charged ion formed when an atom loses one or more electrons.
Anion
A negatively charged ion formed when an atom gains one or more electrons.
Ionic bond
A chemical bond formed between two ions with opposite charges.
Binary ionic compound
A compound that consists of two different elements, typically one metal and one non-metal.
Charge of an ion
The difference in the number of protons and electrons in an atom, resulting in a net electric charge.
Criss-cross rule
A method used to determine the chemical formula of an ionic compound by balancing the charges of the ions.
Matter Map
A diagram that categorizes all matter into different classifications, including elements, compounds, and mixtures.
Ionic compound
A compound that consists of ions held together by ionic bonds.
Inorganic compounds
Compounds that typically do not contain carbon-hydrogen bonds.
Organic compounds
Compounds that contain carbon and are typically associated with living organisms.
Chemical formula
A representation of a substance using symbols for its constituent elements and numbers to indicate the ratio of atoms.
Neutral charge
When an atom has an equal number of protons and electrons.
High melting points
A characteristic usually seen in ionic compounds, indicating strong ionic bonds.
Electrical conductivity in ionic compounds
The ability of ionic compounds to conduct electricity when melted or dissolved.
