What are the five layers of the cornea, from anterior to posterior?
Epithelium, Bowman's membrane, Stroma (substantia propria), Descemet's membrane, Endothelium
What is the main refractive surface of the eye, and what is its refractive power?
The cornea, with a refractive power of 42 Diopters.
How does the normal human cornea receive nutrition, being avascular?
By diffusion from limbal capillaries, the tear film (atmospheric oxygen), and the aqueous humor.
What is a hypopyon ulcer, and what is it typically associated with?
A disc-shaped corneal ulcer associated with severe iritis and hypopyon (sterile pus in the anterior chamber), often linked to pneumococcus infection and dacryocystitis.
What is Keratomalacia, and what is its main cause?
A suppurative keratitis caused by a deficiency of vitamin A, characterized by diffuse keratinization of mucous membrane epithelia, including the cornea and conjunctiva.
