Calcium Chloride
An electrolyte essential for the functional integrity of nervous and muscular systems.
Mechanism of Action of Calcium Chloride
Enhances automaticity and acts as a positive inotrope.
Indications for Calcium Chloride
Used to treat hyperkalemia, hypocalcemia, calcium channel blocker toxicity, hypomagnesemia, respiratory depression after MgSO4 administration, and to prevent hypotension from Calcium Channel Blocker.
Contraindications for Calcium Chloride
Not indicated in cases of VFib, digitalis toxicity, hypercalcemia, or renal or cardiac disease.
Adult Dose of Calcium Chloride
8 - 16 mg/kg over 3 minutes.
Pediatric Dose of Calcium Chloride
5 mg/kg over 3 minutes.
Side Effects of Calcium Chloride
Can cause bradycardia, hypotension, and a metallic taste.
Precautions with Calcium Chloride
Risk of severe local necrosis if infiltrated.
