ICT (Information and Communications Technology)
Technologies that facilitate information transfer and electronically mediated communication; ICT is ubiquitous, affordable, and supports decision-making, connectivity, and task efficiency.
IT (Information Technology)
A subset of ICT comprising the technical tools and systems used within ICT, including computers, software, networking, and IT infrastructure.
Information
Knowledge derived from reading, studying, or research; data that has been processed to become meaningful.
Data
Raw facts or figures that can be processed to produce information.
Knowledge
Processed information that enables understanding, decision-making, or prediction of outcomes.
Communication
Transmitting messages verbally and non-verbally; the exchange of information between individuals.
Technology
Tools and methods that improve daily tasks and activities.
Information lifecycle activities
ICT supports gathering, processing, storing, and presenting information, and promotes collaboration and communication.
ICT breakdown
ICT = Information + Communication + Technology; tools and systems that handle information, communication, and technological processes.
Evolution of Technology
The progression from basic tools to machines to automated and intelligent systems to make tasks easier and faster.
Basic Tools
Simple implements used to ease manual labor (e.g., hacksaws, hammers, nails).
Wheel
The wheel revolutionized transportation; illustrates how tools are combined to create efficient machines.
Computer
An electronic device that accepts and processes data and produces results; has evolved toward automation.
Automation
Making systems operate automatically using sensors, wireless applications, expert systems, and system integration.
Automated System
A system that follows a preset set of rules without learning or adapting.
Intelligent System
A system capable of learning and adapting; often leading to artificial intelligence.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Machines that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, enabling intelligent and adaptive behavior.
Intelligent Cars
AI-driven vehicles that can drive themselves and park automatically.
Belongingness Hypothesis
The psychological need to feel connected to others, which motivates the use of devices for communication.
