What is Benign Prostate Hyperplasia(BPH)?
enlarged prostate
proliferation of prostate glandular tissue
What are the S&S of BPH?
urgency and delay in starting urine flow
decrease in flow of urine, urine retention
How do you diagnose BPH?
enlarged prostate is felt on digital rectal exam (DRE)
elevated Prostate Specific Antigen(PSA)
What is the treatment of BPH?
surgery to decrease size—TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate)
What is Prostate cancer?
malignant neoplastic condition of the prostate gland
S&S similar to BPH
How do you diagnose Prostate cancer?
an increase in Prostate Specific Antigen(PSA)
What are the risk factors of Prostate cancer?
age over 54
a diet high in saturated fat
high testosterone levels (promotes tumor growth)
African American race
What is Testicular cancer?
malignant neoplastic condition of the testicle.
What are the risk factors for Testicular cancer?
occurs most commonly in age range 15-35;
higher incidence in males with unresolved cryptorchidism (undescended testes)
What is the detection method of testicular cancer?
has a cure rate of 95% when caught early
testicular self-exam should be done monthly, for early detection
What are the other male specific infections?
prostatitis and urethritis
caused by Chlamydia and Gonorrhea
What is the Dysmenorrhea?
general term for menstruation that is more painful, frequent, and/or larger in bleeding volume than is normal
What is Amenorrhea?
absence of menses
What is Endometriosis?
ectopic endometrium in pelvis
caused by retrograde menstruation
What are the S&S of Endometriosis?
dyspareunia (pain during intercourse)
dysmenorrhea
pelvic pain
leads to infertility
What is Ovarian cancer?
malignant neoplastic condition of the ovaries with unknown etiology
What are the S&S of Ovarian cancer?
vague S&S—bloat, vague abdominal discomfort, constipation
so often not diagnosed till has metastasized to areas such as liver
What is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease(PID)?
infection of cervix(cervicitis)
uterus(endometritis and/or myometritis)
fallopian tubes (salpingitis)
ovaries (oopheritis)
caused by chlamydia
What are the S&S of PID?
vaginal discharge
pelvic pain that worsens with movement
What are the Urological Infections?
involve bladder (cystitis)
kidneys (pyelonephritis)
entire tract (UTI—urinary tract infection)
more common on women
What are the S&S of Urological Infections?
dysuria --pain on urination
frequency and urgency of urination
hematuria - blood in urine
pyuria--pus in urine
abdominal & back pain at costovertebral angle where kidneys are located (if pyelonephritis)
