Phases of the Human Sexual Response
1. Excitement

3. Orgasm
4. Resolution
Excitement Phase (Arousal)
The first stage of the human sexual response. Includes:
▪ Myotonia (muscle tension)
▪ Vasocongestion (swelling)
▪ Increase heart rate
▪ Increase blood pressure
▪ Sex flush (blood "rash" on chest or breasts)
▪ Duration: 1 minute to several hours
Excitement Phase (Female Response)
- clitoral shaft increases
- labia majora separate
- labia minora increase in size and become colored
Excitement Phase (Male Response)
- full erection
- testes elevation
- scrotum skin thickens/tensing
Plateau Phase
Phase in human sexual response in which sexual tension builds. Includes:
▪ Continued myotonia, continued vasocongestion
▪ Continued increased heart rate
▪ Continued increased blood pressure
▪ Duration: 30 sec - 3 minutes
Plateau Phase (Female Response)
- orgasmic platform: engorgement of outer 1/3 of vagina
- clitoris retracts under its hood
- labia minora deepen in color
Plateau Phase (Male Response)
- corona further engorged
- testes engorged and elevated
- loss of erection: unlikely
Orgasmic Phase
The third stage in the human sexual response cycle. It's characterized by a series of muscular contractions (0.8
sec frequency). It lasts for about 2-10 seconds.
Orgasmic Phase (Female Response)
- clitoris retracted
- orgasmic platform contracts
- rectal sphincter contracts
Orgasmic Phase (Male Response)
Emission and expulsion of semen contractions of the urethra, the base of the penis, and rectal muscles.
Resolution Phase
The final stage of the sexual response cycle, in which the body returns to homeostasis. Includes:
▪ Reversal in myotonia
▪ Reversal of vasocongestion
▪ Reduction in heart rate
▪ Reduction in blood pressure
▪ Duration: 10-15 minutes
Resolution Phase (Female Phase)
- clitoris descends
- labia returns to unaroused position and color
Resolution Phase (Male Phase)
- erection loss
- testes descend
- scrotum thins
Refractory Period
A resting period after orgasm, during which a man cannot achieve another. Usually the recovery phase after orgasm during which it is physiologically impossible for a man to have additional orgasms.
