a temporary closure of all banks in the United States, Implemented during the Great Depression to prevent bank runs and stabilize the financial system.
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)
New Deal program that provided reparations in the stock market, and protected people from fraud of investments in stock.
Works Progress Administration (WPA)
An american new deal agency that employed millions of jobseekers to carry out public works projects.
21st Amendment
repealed the 18th Amendment, giving states the power to regulate alcohol within their own borders.
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
provided jobs for young, unemployed men during the Great Depression
Court Packing plan
FDR’s attempt to add additional justices to the Supreme Court. The political manipulation of the Supreme Court.
Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA)
federal law of the New Deal era designed to boost agricultural prices by reducing surpluses
Federal Housing Administration (FHA)
A governmental agency that regulated interest rates and mortgage terms after the banking crisis of the 1930’s
Fair Labor Standards Act
Establishes minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping, and youth employment standards affecting employees in the private sector and in Federal, State, and Local governments.
National Recovery Administration (NRA)
a prime agency established by FDR with the goal of reviving the economy during the Great Depression.
American Liberty League
formed in 1934 by conservative democrats and wealthy business elites to oppose the New Deal and FDR.
Indian Reorganization Act
promoted self government and economic development. Recognized tribal governments and encouraged tribes to adopt U.S. style constitutions and governing councils.
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)
A relief program that built dams, controlled flooding, and brought electricity, agricultural, and industrial development to rural areas in the specified area.
Wagner Act
A U.S. Law that guarantees the right of private sector employees to organize into labor unions, engage in collective bargaining, and take collective action like strikes to protect workers rights to unionize and negotiate with their employers.
Committee on Industrial Organization (CIO)
a federation of unions that organized workers in industrial unions.
