Fredrick Douglass

Before Fredrick Douglass was an abolitionist, he was enslaved by Edward Covey. The main experience that shaped Douglass’s life as an abolitionist was when he fought against the unfair treatment that Covey put on him. After escaping slavery, Fredrick Douglass would speak out about his experiences as an enslaved person, to try and tell people how bad the institution of slavery was. To further explain and persuade audiences that the institution of slavery is bad and splitting up the union, Douglass would write a book about his life as an enslaved person named, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. Douglass would also help shuttle runaway enslaved people to Canada with his work through the underground railroad.

William Llord Garrison

The main event that shaped Garrison’s view as an abolitionist was when he lived and interacted with black people. He saw first hand the treatment and racism that they endured and he thought it was unfair and unjust, and sought out the dream of removing the institution of slavery from the United States. Garrison would then make a newspaper called The Liberator. There, he would speak out about how the institution of slavery is bad and how it should be immediately abolished. Garrison had very religious views and morals, and tried to end slavery with non violence however, he supported the rebellions that enslaved people made, and eventually the civil war to end slavery.
