Carbohydrates
Sugars & Starches
Functions of Carbs
Main Source for Quick Fuel.
It makes up the Cell Wall in Plants, if without it it would be mushy and fall over.
They are Tags on the Surface of Cells so they can recognize each other.
Monosaccharide
1 Sugar. The monomer of Carbohydrates.
What are the 2 types of Carbohydrates? What are some examples of each?
Simple: Candy, Sugar Cane, and Donuts. Made up of 1 or 2 Monomers (Sweet)
Complex: Potatoes, Pasta, Seeds, and Grains. Made up of 3 or more Monomers.
What are Proteins?
What is Protein Made up of?
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, and Sometimes Sulfur(CHONS)
Where is Protein found?
In Cell Membranes and in Animal Muscles. There are also some in Plants but there aren't a lot of Amino Acids in Plants.
Amino Acids
The monomer that Proteins are made up of.
Polypeptides
A synonym for Protein.
What are Proteins like?
Thy are like balled up beads in a chain.
How many types of Amino Acids do we need? How much does our body make? How much do we eat?
20 Needed, 11 Made by our body, 9 needed to eat.
What are Lipids?
It is Long Term/Stored Energy.
What are some Functions of Lipids?
1. WAXES for WATERPROOFING
2. INSULATE the body to maintain normal temperature
3. They CUSHION the organs for protection
4. STEROIDS are lipids
What makes up all Cell Membranes? (Lipids)
Phospholipids
What are Triglyceride?
They are the the ones with the 3 tails.
What are the two types of Steroids?
Natural & Synthetic.
