The common-ion effect is the
suppression of a weak electrolyte’s ionization by the presence of a strong electrolyte containing an ion in common with the weak electrolyte.
Common ions…
reduce the solubility of ionic compounds.
The molar solubility of AgCl is
1.33 × 10–5 M.
When 0.200 M NaCl is added to the AgCl solution, the
additional Cl− shifts the equilibrium back to AgCl(s).
The pH of a solution will affect
the solubility of an ionic compound that has a basic anion.
Acid neutralizes the basic anion, shifting
the equilibrium to the right, increasing the solubility of the compound.
This is also true for
anions that are weak bases.
