Who is George Herbert Mead?
An American sociologist and philosopher known for the theory of social behaviorism and symbolic interactionism.
What is symbolic interactionism?
A theory that says individuals develop a sense of self through interpreting symbols and gestures in social interactions
What are symbols?
Words, gestures, or objects that carry meaning (e.g., smile = friendship, wedding ring = marriage).
What is “I”?
The spontaneous, creative, and personal part of the self.
What is “Me”?
The socialized self, shaped by society’s rules, norms, and expectations.
How do “I” and “Me” work together?
“I” acts (impulses), while “Me” checks (social rules) → together, they form the Self.
What is role-taking?
The ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes (e.g., child playing teacher).
What is the “generalized other”?
The internalized attitudes, values, and norms of society that guide behavior.
Example of symbolic interactionism in daily life?
A student raises a hand before speaking in class because they know it symbolizes respect and order.
