Good time of day, could you please introduce yourself to the court?
My name is Nel Doos.
What do you do for work?
I am a future famous actor! But right now just focusing on the actor part.
What have you acted in?
Well, my biggest role in drama has been as an extra in the walking dead. I swear you can see my zombified hand in some of those shots! However, it’s mostly just reality TV right now. My fav role was in The Saboteurs.
Why are you here today?
I’m here to talk about what I saw during season 10 of the Saboteurs. My co-star Rob Armstrong died, and one of my other co-stars, Charlie Martin, has been accused of murdering him.
How well did you know Ms. Martin?
Pretty well, actually. It’s hard to find someone who mostly looks like they are listening to you rant about The Mentalist and it’s very nicely done 6-season murder mystery. Oh, and we were both Saboteurs on season 10, so we worked together every day until I eventually got murdered.
What do you mean, “murdered”?
OH! you don’t watch the show? Really? I mean I’m not being super biased when I tell you you should. Anyway, that’s just the word the show uses for “eliminated.” It’s very dramatic. You can get murdered by either coming last in a competition challenge or being voted off by the other contestants.
What other terms did the show use for drama?
It’s all pretty “death” related, you know, so you can up the ante. One time, the host of the show, Indigo Quade, told all of us that if we finished last in that day’s challenge, “you’re going to the morgue.” (184).
Let’s talk about drama on the show. As a contestant on set, do you act differently when the cameras are rolling?
Obviously! What kind of almost actor if it was just me up on the screen. Plus, it was also pretty common for filming to take long –like, a single episode would take six days to film. The interviews were never filmed in just one take either. They call it “reality TV” but anyone who’s anyone knows that it’s anything but reality.
How is it different from real life?
Well people play up their emotions for the camera. They create characters that are sometimes very different from who they are in real life. I mean I decided to draw inspo from the queen of reality TV drama: Elise from season 9 of Hell’s Kitchen. She’s my icon.
Did it seem like Ms. Martin did this?
Yes, whenever I was watching charlie it seemed she was amped up in front of the cameras especially in regards to her rivalry with Rob. I saw Charlie in the halls with no cameras, and Charlie on set in front of the cameras, it seemed to me that there was a difference between the two.
You mentioned being a Saboteur with Ms. Martin. What were your duties as a Saboteur?
We met secretly in like a Lemoncello-looking library to decide which contestant to sabotage in the hopes of getting them murdered. Once we decided who to sabotage, we then decided on how to do it.
Did you ever agree on sabotaging Rob Armstrong?
Yes, a few times, I mean, given that Rob was like legend-wait for it- dary at all the challenges, and you’d be surprised to hear it but, strategically, we chose not to do it all the time.
Why not?
There’s always the question of whether it is better to murder someone who was favored to win early on, just to get them out of the way, or if we should murder an underdog who might slip under the radar.
Were there any instances of trying to eliminate Rob Armstrong early on?
Yes, from the very first day. At dinner on February 11, we were all asked to write down a name to be the first murder victim. Rob was too risky to keep around, and I had done some lobbying earlier in the day to get him murdered.
So were you the only one to vote Mr. Armstrong for elimination?
No. I actually saw that Charlie also voted to eliminate Rob early on. I looked over and saw Rob written on her paper. I wasn’t surprised to learn that Rob wasn’t actually voted off, though, given how much he and Charlie’s rivalry made for good TV.
If everyone voted the way you and Ms. Martin did, what would have happened?
Rob would have been murdered right then and there.
So what happened instead?
That night, Charlie and I found out we were Saboteurs. Afterwards, one of the producers, Riley Kaye, pulled Charlie and me aside and told us that she “ will make sure that you each get $50,000 under the table” if we made sure that Rob and Charlie lasted until episode 4. I’m like living the starving artist trope rn.
Could you see how Ms. Martin reacted to this plan?
Like any American, Charlie got a big smile and said “I’ll do anything for money.”
As the weeks went on, did the Saboteurs stick to the plan?
We sure did. By the time we got through episode 5, four other contestants were gone. But after episode 4, it was game on again, and Rob was fair game to target.
How well did you know Rob Armstrong?
I knew Rob pretty well. Even at our first dinner he was already chatting and making friends. (103) Rob was an amazing competitor, but he tended to push himself WAY too hard - even beyond the limits of safety. (128)
What do you mean, he pushed himself beyond the limits of safety?
Well, competition is pretty clear cut. There’s competitive and then there’s “win at all costs.” Rob was fully on the “win at all costs” end.
Can you give an example of what you’re talking about?
A week before the final episode, Rob had to swim underwater for a dive challenge. All the competitors were given air tanks to use, but the sabotage chosen for that week was to hide Rob’s air tank. He did the challenge without the air tank, it really seemed like there was no limit for Rob….
